Sicilian Defense Four Knights Cobra Variation
Sicilian Defense Four Knights — Cobra Variation
Definition
The Cobra Variation is a branch of the Sicilian Defense, Four Knights setup that arises after the moves 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. Nc3 Nf6 6. Ndb5 Bb4!?. Black’s sixth-move bishop sortie to b4 (instead of the more common 6…d6) is what gives the line its zoological nickname. The bishop “rears up” in front of the black camp, pinning the knight on c3 and insinuating itself into the center—a stance that early analysts thought looked like a poised cobra ready to strike.
Move Order & Key Branches
Starting position of the variation:
7. a3 (most popular) Bxc3+ 8. Nxc3
d5
or
7. Nd6+ Ke7 8. Nxc8
Rxc8 — a double-edged pawn-grab that forces an uncastled black king but concedes the bishop pair.
- 7. a3 is regarded as the “Main Line.” Black almost always exchanges on c3, arguing that the resulting doubled c-pawns give Black an easy strike with …d5.
- 7. Nd6+ is the critical gambit line. White wins the dark-squared bishop but wastes time and lets Black activate the rook on c8.
- 7. e5 is a rare sideline that tries to exploit the pin tactically; Black should not fall asleep: 7…Nxe4! 8. a3 Qa5 keeps the balance.
Strategic Ideas
• Central Break …d5. By eliminating the c3 knight and
often forcing doubled c-pawns, Black aims to play …d5
surprisingly early—something that is harder to achieve in the usual Four
Knights setup.
• Structure vs. Activity. White preserves a healthy pawn
structure only by allowing the Nd6+ line, which leaves the black king
in the center but hands over the bishop pair. In the main line (with doubled
pawns) White wants piece activity and the half-open b-file to prove that
the structural defect is irrelevant.
• Dark-Square Weaknesses. After …Bxc3+ Black no longer
has a dark-squared bishop; White can target the squares d6, f6,
and h6 in the middlegame.
Historical Background
The line was first tested seriously in Soviet circles during the late 1960s. IM Evgeny Sveshnikov jokingly christened it the “Cobra” while analyzing with colleagues in Chelyabinsk, the same creative laboratory that later produced the Sveshnikov and Chelyabinsk Sicilians. Although never a main-stream weapon, it attracted a cadre of dynamic players such as Sergey Tiviakov, Alexander Morozevich, and Étienne Bacrot, each of whom employed it to fight for the full point with Black.
Illustrative Games
-
Alexander Morozevich – Sergey Tiviakov,
Wijk aan Zee 1999
The main-line a3 Bxc3+ struggle. Tiviakov equalized quickly and later won in a sharp opposite-side castling battle.
-
Boris Gelfand – Étienne Bacrot,
Monaco Blindfold 2003
White tries the ambitious 7. Nd6+. Bacrot walks his king to e7 and later to the queenside; the unbalanced piece constellation led to rich tactics before the game was finally drawn.
Typical Tactical Motifs
- The Nxe4 Tactic. With the pawn on e4 unprotected, Black often plays …Nxe4 exploiting the pin on c3.
- The Nd6+ Fork. White’s knight jump wins the dark-squared bishop but has to be timed precisely to avoid …Qb8+ counter-shots.
- Exchange Sacrifice on c3. Even after castling, Black may later drop a rook on c3 (after …Bxc3+) to shatter the doubled pawns and expose White’s king on the queenside, echoing classic Sicilian exchange sacs.

• Black has achieved the thematic …d5 break.
• White owns the bishop pair but must prove that the doubled c-pawns
will not become long-term weaknesses.
• The center is fluid; both kings are still in the middle, promising a sharp
struggle.
Interesting Facts & Anecdotes
- Because the variation frequently reaches an IQP (Isolated Queen’s Pawn) structure, some theoreticians file Cobra material next to the Tarrasch French in their databases!
- Sergey Tiviakov once remarked that the beauty of 6…Bb4 is that “it equalizes or loses immediately—no boring middles.”
- The line has been used in correspondence and engine games to score some eye-catching miniature wins; computers like it because the early …d5 break often yields concrete equality.
